At Rice -- 2012: Was sidelined before the start of fall practices (2011) and did not see game action in the spring... Played locally for the Houston Wildcats over the summer.
High School -- A 2011 graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, Tex.... Three-year varsity starter who saw action on the mound, behind the plate and in the outfield during his prep career... Two-time All-Galveston County honoree (catcher in 2011)... Served two seasons as the team captain... Batted .385 with a .585 slugging percentage and .437 on-base average as a senior in 2011 to help the Tornados reach the 4A Region III bi-district playoffs for the first time in eight years... Went 3-2 on the mound with a 3.15 ERA as a junior in 2010 when the team played in class 5A... Struck out 18 and walked only four in 20 innings of work... Coached by Steve Hecker... National Honors Society member... Maintained a 4.2 grade point average (5.0 scale)... Graduated with Honors.
Personal -- Full name: Austin Michael Orewiler. Born: May 18, 1993 in Tiffin, Ohio. Parents: Ryan and Katherine Orewiler of Galveston. Chose to attend Rice over Dartmouth and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Worked as a volunteer with a youth baseball team and coached a little league team that won the East Texas championship.
