Chandler Named C-USA Freshman of the Year; Rice Next Plays FIU Wednesday Afternoon
Rice defeated Stanford 12-1 in the final game of their weekend series.
At Rice -- Worked hard to develop over the course of his college career, and such a clear improvement is evident by his evolution from a part-time contributor in 2014 to first team all-conference honors this season… 2015: All-Conference USA (first team); All-Silver Glove Series (for annual series vs. crosstown rival Houston); Ranked among the C-USA league leaders with a 2.44 ERA (4th), 80 strikeouts (4th), a .220 opponents’ batting average (6th), six wins (tied tenth) and a total of 84.2 innings pitched (11th)… Finished fourth on the staff in starts (7) and pitched in 23 games overall… Tallied 8.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, and maintained a 2.8-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio… Third on the Owl staff with a 1.23 WHIP… Averaged almost exactly 6.0 innings for seven starts… Proved he could start or relieve with equal ability, but opposing batters hit just .214 against him when coming out of the bullpen… Final innings were split almost equally between starting (41.1) and the pen (43.1)… Relief innings edged his totals as a starter thanks to two sensational outings out of the pen when the team’s back was against the wall near the end of the season – the first was 5.1 frames in an elimination game in the C-USA Tournament against Middle Tennessee where he allowed just one earned run and struck out seven; the second was in his final outing of the year on May 31, an eye-opening 9.1 relief innings on the road against nationally ranked Houston (where the Owls finally won the marathon against their crosstown rival in a 20-inning game that ended after 2 am)… Held the heavy-hitting Cougars to no runs on three singles while striking out seven… In an earlier start against that same Houston squad (April 14) he struck out a career-high 11 in 6.0 shutout innings, but was lifted after six frames because his teammates built a comfortable 11-0 lead… Recorded wins against some college baseball’s top teams of 2015, a list that includes Stanford, Arizona and Houston (twice)… Picked four runners off base, the fourth-highest total of any pitcher in the conference… Pitching style proved to be able to get a substantially higher number ground ball outs (99) than fly ball outs (61)... 2014: Put together a solid first competitive season with 12 appearances, all in relief... Maintained a 2.35 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in 15.1 innings... Held all opponents to a .200 batting average... Made collegiate debut in the finale of the Purdue series and fired a scoreless ninth inning... Pitched ten days later on the road at eventual NCAA Regional participant Sam Houston State and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn first career save... Saw action in all three games of the opening Conference USA series of the season vs. an Old Dominion team that went on to play in the NCAA Tournament... Winning pitcher in the 17-inning marathon second game of the series, before coming back to pitch in the finale that also went extra innings... Posted a career-high three strikeouts in 2.0 shutout innings on the road at Lamar... Maintained a 2.2-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio for the full season... Pitched a career-long 3.0 shutout frames against Texas A&M, followed by another 2.1 scoreless innings in the finale vs. Houston... In six games vs. eventual NCAA Tournament teams totaling 7.2 innings, he did not allow any runs on five hits and held opposing hitters to a composite .185 batting average... Closed out the year with a streak of 8.1 scoreless innings over four appearances, where he allowed just two singles and two walks with six strikeouts... 2013: Did not see game action... 2012: Was sidelined before the start of fall practices (2011) and gained a redshirt season for the spring... Played locally for the Houston Wildcats over the summer.
High School -- A 2011 graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, Tex.... Three-year varsity starter who saw action on the mound, behind the plate and in the outfield during his prep career... Two-time All-Galveston County honoree (catcher in 2011)... Served two seasons as the team captain... Batted .385 with a .585 slugging percentage and .437 on-base average as a senior in 2011 to help the Tornados reach the 4A Region III bi-district playoffs for the first time in eight years... Went 3-2 on the mound with a 3.15 ERA as a junior in 2010 when the team played in class 5A... Struck out 18 and walked only four in 20 innings of work... Coached by Steve Hecker... National Honors Society member... Maintained a 4.2 grade point average (5.0 scale)... Graduated with Honors.
