Rice -- 2010: Appeared in 19 games with nine starts, finishing fourth on the team in both categories... Posted the staff's second-best ERA and opponent's batting average (in minimum 1.0 IP per team game)... Pitched a career-long 7.0 innings against a TCU squad that went on to play in the College World Series, but left the contest with a no-decision... Allowed just one run to the Horned Frogs on a solo homer at Minute Maid Park while striking out a season-high four... Six of nine starts were against teams that went on to play in NCAA Regionals (TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Southern Miss, California and San Diego)... Also started against defending Southern Conference champion Elon, where he notched first Division I win since 2008... Often had solid outings, but the offensive support from teammates was the worst for any Rice starting pitcher - including a .254 Rice batting average that was 83 points lower than when other Owls started (.337)... Also, Rice's slugging percentage in his starts was almost 200 points lower than other Owl starters (.361 to .555), and the defense behind him followed suit by fielding 15 points lower than for other starters (.961 to .976)... The Rice bullpen twice enjoyed getting wins after he started and left the game (TCU, Cal), and twice surrendered leads after his quality starts (San Diego, UAB)... Allowed just one earned run in 6.0 innings at San Diego and one run in 5.1 innings against UAB (both no-decisions)... Matched season-high four strikeouts against UAB, and tallied another four in 5.1 innings (and just two runs) at No. 3 ranked Texas in the NCAA Regional... Proved he could pitch effectively out of the bullpen, earning wins against C-USA foes Southern Miss and Houston... Allowed just two runs in a rugged 5.2 relief innings at home against Southern Miss... Handcuffed Houston to 2.2 innings of shutout relief, and did the same in the road win at Texas State... Finished second on the staff in inducing ground ball double-plays (10)... Showed he can field his position by registering the most defensive assists (17) of any Owl pitcher.
