Signing Day 2018
Rice head football coach Mike Bloomgren signed a total of 18 players from eight states in addition to Texas during the spring signing perdio who will join with the six players who signed during the early recruiting period in December.
In addition to 16 players from the Texas, the Owls signed one high school player each from California, Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York and South Carolina, the most since the Owls signed players from six states in 2003. The Owls also added their first graduate transfer since 2014 in quarterback Shawn Stankavage from Vanderbilt who played his high school football in North Carolina.
"We wanted to set a tone with this class, where we want to maintain a strong presence within Texas while also extending our efforts throughout the country," Bloomgren said. "Thanks to some great work by our staff, we were able to identify some talented players who were excited by the opportunity to join us at Rice. This group is not only talented, but they have great passion for the game and come from successful programs. That is what will define this program, talented players who have a passion for football and are dedicated to seeing Rice become a consistent winner."

Meet The Owls
All-District 19-6A while compiling 53 tackles (five sacks) for coach Mark Modeste at Strake Jesuit, the same school that produced two-time All-Conference USA linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee... Led the Crusaders to the second round of the 6A D2 playoffs before falling to eventual state champion Cy Fair... Top game as a senior came against Cinco Ranch when he was credited with 10 tackles and pair of sacks... Also credited with 21 quarterback hurries, including seven vs. Memorial...Competes in the discus and threw his career best (142-4) when competing at the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice... Academic All-State second team.
Bloomgren on Adams: "Miles has a very long frame and shows great natural instincts as pass rusher who is also a solid tackler at the point of contact. He is a local kid from Houston which is very important to me."
Credited with 66 tackles in eight games as a senior for coach Phil Young for Arlington Heights as the Yellow Jackets advanced to the 5A D1 state playoffs... Earned All-District 7-5A honors as a defensive end and a junior... Compiled 119 tackles with seven sacks in his two years as a starter.

TAPPS Division 1 All-State selection as a cornerback for coach Aaron Beck at All Saints leading the team to the state semifinals... Credited with 47 tackles, four for a loss, two interceptions, 12 passes broken up and three forced fumbles... Also recorded a safety... Top game of the year was against Houston's St. Pius X when he was credited with 11 tackles and picked off a pass in a 49-37 win.
Bloomgren on Bird: "Andrew has exceptional length and instincts at corner, which will allow him to high point the football and create takeaways. He will excel in Brian Smith's press man coverage schemes and also has the ability to be physical and hit the ball carrier."
Three-year starter and District 15-6A Offensive MVP as a senior in his first year at quarterback for coach Mark Soto, leading Rattlers to their first district title since 2003... Finished the season with 3,039 yards of total offense, including 1,777 on the ground with 27 touchdowns and a 10.1 yards per carry average... All-District selection as a junior as a defensive back and was credited with 160 tackles in two seasons along with four interceptions in his career... Finished with 852 yards on kickoff returns as well... Competed in powerlifting in all four years of high school... THSCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention
Bloomgren on Calderon: "Dynamic athlete who can affect all three phases of the game. The development of his footwork and athleticism, along with his increased football IQ during his one year at Quarterback will help him transition back to safety smoothly."
All-State and two-time All-Region II-AAA in South Carolina for coach Tim McMahon... Region II-AAA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior while leading Emerald to the regional championship and a berth in the AAA state semifinals... Credited with 120 tackles, 33 for loss (11 sacks) forced three fumbles, recovered four, returned an interception for a touchdown and also recorded a safety as a senior... Rushed for 950 yards and scored 13 times on offense... First Rice signee from South Carolina since linebacker Rashard Reynolds in 1994... Two-time team offensive MVP for Emerald as a sophomore and junior... Rushed for 2,180 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in his career... Competes in track and was a state qualifier in the 100 and as part of Emerald's 4x100 relay.
Bloomgren on Chamberlain: "We first were made aware of Treshawn by a good friend of mine who is on the coaching staff at his high school and it didn't take us long to see the passion and love he has for the game. He is a speed to contact type player that we feel will help us immediately at the Viper position."
All-District 5-6A as a both a tight end and defensive end (unanimous selection) for coach Hal Wasson at Southlake Carroll as the Dragons reached the 6A D2 quarterfinals... Named to the Associate Press 6A All-State second team and also named to the Fort Worth Star Telegram All-Area team... Caught three touchdowns as a tight end and was credited with 68 tackles with 15 for loss (six sacks) and added 18 hurries and forced three fumbles... Finished his career with 163 tackles (34 for loss, 11 sacks)... Competed in wrestling as well and finished fourth at the 6A state tournament in the 220 pound division... Academic All-State and a member of the National Honor Society and the one of eight Carroll senior boys selected by the faculty to represent the school as Green Jackets in a variety of school and civic events.
Bloomgren on Doddridge: "Jacob is a throwback football player who plays this game the right way. His physical play and the understanding of leverage he has learned from wrestling will allow him to be a great asset in this offense at the fullback position."
Named to the Class 5 All-State second team by both the Missouri Football Coaches Association and the media as a senior for Coach William Perkins... Led Ruskin to its first win in the state playoffs since 1991 with a 20-14 win over Raytown, despite suiting up just 19 players for the game... Earned third team honors as a junior and was a three year starter for the Golden Eagles... Wrestled as well in high school and was a state qualifier and all-district selection at 220 pounds... Named to the Principal's Honor Roll and also participates in marching band.
Bloomgren on Enechukwu: "Ikenna is raw clay and still growing into his body. With his length and body size the ceiling for him is extremely high."
Three-year starter for Terry Hendrix who broke Marshawn Lynch's the Oakland Athletic League's single-season rushing record, piling up 2,626 yards and 36 touchdowns in 11 games as a senior while leading the Tigers to the CAF Sectional playoffs... Co-MVP of the OAL as a senior and named to the San Francisco Chronicle's All-Metro team... Credited with 87 tackles on defense... Rushed for 4,094 yards and 76 touchdowns in three seasons... Rice's first scholarship signee from California since the Owls signed wide receiver Cabot Denny from Palos Verdes Estates in 1998...A member of the Honor Roll.
Bloomgren on Faaeteete: "Tay Tay is an explosive RB who shows the ability to jump in and out of cuts and the speed to run away from defenders. He also has the ability to run behind his pads in the tackle box and punish would-be tacklers."
All-State, All-county and All-Area selection as a senior for coach Joe Spagnolo as a senior for the Gaels who finished 6-4 and reached the semifinals of the New York Catholic High School tournament after winning it in 2016... First Rice signee from New York since 1974 when the Owls signed for players from the state... Led an offensive attack that gained 4,030 yards and averaged 35.1 points per game... Two-year team captain... Throws the shot and discus and has competed in the New Balance Nationals twice... Serves as a Peer Counselor and Campus Minister at Iona Prep and has posted a perfect class attendance since the 8th grade.
Bloomgren on Ferraro: "Derek is the biggest offensive lineman in this class and he shows a strong desire to impose his will on defenders and finish them."
Two-year letterman for Coach Darrell Sutherland at Bartram Trail and a starter as senior as the Bears reached the Florida 7A championship game... Caught 10 passes for 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns... Competes in track in both the hurdles and discus... Ranks in the top 10% of his senior class.
Bloomgren on French: "Robert is a versatile athlete at the TE position. He's a willing blocker who made big plays in the passing game in the biggest moments of the season for his team."
Garcia was a two-time, TAPPS D1 All-State selection for the Friars under coach Chuck Faucette. Bishop Lynch won the 2016 D1 title and advanced to the semifinals in 2017 before falling to Houston's St. Pius X. He also earned Academic All-State honors as well.
Bloomgren on Garcia: "Cole is a physical player who dominates and finishes his man to the echo of the whistle. He is a poster child for the quote 'drive his man from point A to point B against his will'. He has the size to compete for playing time the moment he walks on campus."
Made the most of his return to the field after an injury as a junior, quarterbacking Prestonwood to the 2017 TAPPS Division 1 state title... Named to the TAPPS Division 1 All-State second team after throwing for 4,101 yards and 50 touchdowns while completing 67% of his passes (288/433)... Capture the state crown by rallying from 18 points down in the third quarter to defeat Houston's St. Pius X, 42-41 and reached the finals by avenging a regular season loss to Fort Worth All Saints and fellow Rice signees Andrew Bird and Brendan Harmon... Also lettered twice in baseball... 2017 Homecoming King, National Honor Society, A Honor Roll and ranks in the top 10% of his class... A member of the Young Men's Service League - national mother-son volunteer organization. 20+ hours annually volunteer service... Participated in a 2018 mission trip with the Prestonwood baseball team to the Dominican Republic with school baseball team... Second-team TAPPS Division 1 All-State selection for coach Aaron Beck at All Saints leading the team to the state semifinals as a senior, catching 67 passes for 1,311 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior... Finished his career with 160 catches, 2,832 yards and 28 touchdowns... High school teammate of Andrew Bird, who signed with the Owls during the December signing period... Also a standout in basketball, earning all-district honors for three years and serving twice as team captain and in track where he is a three-time MVP and holds three school records.

Minnesota Mr. Football, Metro Player of the Year, All-State and AP Defensive Player of the Year for coach Mike Grant as the Eagles capped an undefeated season with their 10th state championship.... Credited with 118 tackles (13 for losses), two interceptions and three forced fumbles on defense while rushing for 24 touchdowns as a senior... Concluded his career with 235 tackles (29 for losses), four forced fumbles and three interceptions... A product of the same high school that produced former Owl safety Corey Frazier... AP Honor Student, Hispanic Scholar and a member of the Environmentalist Club.
Bloomgren on Montero: "When he hits you, you go backwards. Antonio is another throwback type player who processes the physical mindset we need on this team. His skill set and passion will allow him to compete for a LB spot immediately."
Three-year starter for Bob Wager who led the Warriors to the 6A D1 Region 1 semifinals as a senior.... Threw for 1,022 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for 684 and scored 20 times as a senior after rushing for 1,481 on 169 carries (8.8 per carry) and scoring 24 times as a junior... A member of Dave Campbell Texas Football's top 300 as well as DCTF's postseason Class of 2018... Serves on the Student Council and named Warrior of the Month.
Bloomgren on Otoviano: "The ultimate teammate throughout his high school career whose priority was always what was best for the team. He has great vision carrying the ball and sets ups blocks effectively at the 3rd level. His breakaway speed makes him a constant threat to score from anywhere on the field."
Two-year starter for Coach Carlos Lynn as the Longhorns reached the 6A D1 Region 1 title game in his senior year and the D1 regional final as a junior... Credited with 197 tackles, eight sacks and one interception in his career... Cousin of former Cleveland Browns WR Cordell Roberson... First team academic all-district.
Bloomgren on Page: "KP utilizes his great length and burst to disrupt the back field and punish the passer. He has been a tackling machine in his two years on varsity and was a key member of a very productive defense at Cedar Hill."
3A All-State for coach Chris Edwards after catching 37 passes for 891 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior... First FBS recruit in the history of Northwest High.... Caught 17 touchdown passes as a junior... All Parish MVP as a junior in basketball, averaging 22 points a game thanks in part to a 43 ? vertical jump... Class President, Valedictorian and a member of the Poet society.
Bloomgren on Pitre: "There are so many good traits about August that excite us. He is a smooth route-runner that fiercely competes for every ball thrown in his direction and uses his great basketball instincts to attack the ball in the air. He is special with the ball in his hands."
All District (25-6A) for coach Todd Dodge as both a junior and senior at Westlake, and was a starter for three years on teams that went deep into the Texas 6A playoffs... Reached the finals as a sophomore in 2015 (at NRG Stadium in Houston), the quarterfinals in 2016 and the semifinals last year... Scored a touchdown off a blocked punt in the state title game in 2015... Credited with 62 tackles (42 solo), three interceptions, nine pass breakups and one quarterback hurry as a senior and ended his career with 158 tackles (101 solo), five interceptions, 14 pass breakups, one sack, one hurry, one fumble recovery, one blocked punt and two touchdowns... Two-year starter and 2016 All-District 9-6A selection for coach David Collins at Pearce... Spearheaded the blocking for the Mustangs attack that finished second in the district in rushing and total offense while reaching the second round of the 6A D2 state playoffs... Academic All-State selection.
Bloomgren on Servin: "Clay searches for contact and possesses the physical traits we demand in this program. He has the ability to play either guard or tackle, which gives us great flexibility. With his size he will have the opportunity to compete for a spot immediately this summer."
Graduate transfer from Vanderbilt who will join the Owls in the summer... Saw action in one game in 2017 (Alabama A&M) after missing most of the previous two years with injuries... Redshirted and quarterbacked the scout team as a freshman in 2014... Came to Vandy from Cardinal Gibbons High School where he was a two-year starter... Completed 247 of 408 passes for 3,564 yards and 34 TDs, helping Crusaders to 9-4 record and Class 3A state playoff run as a senior in 2013... Also rushed for 1,058 yards and 13 TDs... Named region's Offensive Player of the Year and First Team Big 8 as senior... In 2012, threw for 1,920 yards and 28 TDs as Cardinal Gibbons were conference champions and had an 11-1 overall record... Played varsity basketball... Earned his degree in Economics... Son of Scott Stankavage and Sue Walsh... Dad played QB at University of North Carolina and in NFL with Denver Broncos; mom was an elite swimmer, qualifying for the 1980 Moscow Olympics in the 100-meter backstroke which was boycotted by the United States.

All-District 12-6A as a senior after earning second team honors as a junior for coach Mark Schmid while leading The Highlanders to the district title.... Credited with 36 knockdown blocks while allowing only one sack as a senior and had 74 knockdowns and allowed just four sacks in his career... A member of Dave Campbell Texas Football's top 300 as well as DCTF's postseason Class of 2018... Named to the Houston Chronicle's Houston Top 100... Two-time Academic All-District and Academic All-State second team... Works in the youth sports ministry at his church.

Dallas Morning News Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for 490 yards and seven touchdowns in the Rangers' Bi-District win over Lakeview Centennial... A member of Dave Campbell Texas Football's postseason Class of 2018... Team MVP and team captain... School record holder in the 110 and 300 hurdles and was the district runner up in the 300 hurdles... All-District 27-5A as a senior after earning second team honors as a junior for coach Shaun McDowell while leading the Falcons to the 5A-D1 Region 4 championship game and to the state semifinals as a junior... Credited with 77 tackles, including 11 sacks, broke up three passes and blocked one field goal and one punt... Finished his career with 235 tackles (21 sacks), eight pass breakups, three blocked field goals and two blocked punts... A member of Dave Campbell Texas Football's top 300 as well as DCTF's postseason Class of 2018... Named to the Houston Chronicle's Houston Top 100... The third Falcon to sign with Rice in the last two years, joining Garrett Grammer and Isaiah Richardson at Rice... Throws the shot in track and was an all-district performer and team defensive MVP in lacrosse... Three-time academic all-district...

Three-year starter and four-year letterman for coach Michael Johnson at Bishop Dunne... Second team all-district selection after compiling 33 tackles and a pair of interceptions (one for a touchdown) for the Falcons as a senior... Finished his career with 71 tackles, eight breakups and seven interceptions (three for touchdowns)... Played in three TAPPS D1 championship games, winning the title as a freshman reserve in 2014 and starting in both 2015 & 2016... Named to the Principal's Honor Roll at Dunne... Member of the Sigma Beta and African American Awareness clubs.
