Dr. Jack Garrett, a veteran of more than 30 years of athletics administration, has joined the Rice Athletic Department as the Owls' Associate Athletic Director-Sport Administration/Support Services. Dr. Garrett began his duties at Rice on Wednesday.
"I have known Jack for many years," Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "I worked with him at Indiana University and know him as a man of great passion for student-athletes who has a great work ethic and moral compass."
Garrett will serve as the administrator for Rice's soccer, men's and women's tennis and all track and field and cross country programs. Additionally, he will be the principal administrator for strength and conditioning, the equipment room operations, team trainers and doctors. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana, he spent 18 years at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. He was named department chair in 1994 and was elevated to associate professor in 1996. Garrett also served on a variety of campus committees, including Augustana's athletics committee, faculty senate, campus ministries, general education committee and teacher education committee.
A 1973 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in health education and physical education, Garrett worked as a teacher and coach in Iowa Public Schools in Perry, Storm Lake and Council Bluffs, Iowa from 1973-78.
