May 16, 2014
On a spectacular Friday night, 90 Rice Owl student-athletes joined their classmates in receiving their degrees during the first Undergraduate Convocation as part of Rice University's 101st Commencement.
A new event, the Undergraduate Convocation focused solely upon Rice's newest generation of graduates, a group that included, Jessica Kuster, the school's all-time leader in scoring and rebounding in addition to representative groups from the teams who have won 12 Conference USA Championships during their time on campus, including a record-tying five this year.
Athletes representing nearly every sport walked across the stage during the ceremony. The members of the Rice men's golf teams are currently in Raleigh, North Carolina competing in the NCAA Regional. Two members of the current Rice baseball team, Andrew Murphy and Connor Mason represented their other graduating seniors, Keenan Cook, Shane Hoelscher and Chase McDowell who were at Reckling Park helping the Owls capture their 19th consecutive baseball conference title.
Rice's 101st Commencement will conclude on Saturday morning with the full academic processional, the official conferral of degrees and the Commencement Speaker's address.
