HOUSTON - Juniors Traci Fraser of the soccer team and Brett Olson of the men's cross country team were honored with the Dr. Hubert E. Bray Scholar-Athlete Award as 112 Rice student-athletes were recognized on Sunday for their academic success over the past year at the 21st annual Rice scholar-athlete banquet.
The Dr. Hubert E. Bray Scholar-Athlete Award is presented annually to the Rice male and female student-athletes with the top grade point average. Fraser is majoring in biochemistry, while Olson is a civil engineering major.
Twenty-one student-athletes received Rice University Scholar Athlete awards, which honor the contributing member of each Rice University intercollegiate team with the highest GPA on his or her team. The 2007 Rice University Scholar Athletes are: Samantha Stovall (women's basketball), Susie Barrows (women's cross country), Amy Halsey (swimming), Dominique Karas (women's tennis), Marissa Daniels (women's track & field), Lennie Waite (women's track & field), Rachel Lopez (volleyball), Kyle Gunderson (baseball), Ryne Tacker (baseball), Paulius Packevicius (men's basketball), Lute Barber (football), Biobele Bilaye-Benibo (football), Jonathon Greenberg (men's tennis), Jason Mok (men's tennis), Aaron Robson (men's track & field), Luke Stadel (men's track & field), and Megan Fitzsimmons and Vivek Gopalan (managers & trainers). Fraser and Olson also won the scholar-athlete awards for their sports.
Additionally, 91 student-athletes, including student managers and trainers, were given Honor Athlete awards for carrying a 3.0 or better GPA. To receive any of the awards, the recipients must be a third, fourth or fifth-year student-athlete.
