Don Knodel on Houston's First Final Four

With the start of the Final Four in Houston just over a week away, former Rice men's basketball coach and current Executive Director of the R Association Don Knodel reflects on the last time the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship came to Houston and on an early-season meeting that year with UCLA, which gave Knodel and the Owls a clear indication that the Bruins were indeed the team to beat yet again.

FTR, in their opening two games of the 1970-71 season, UCLA beat Baylor 108-77 and us 124-78 on Dec. 4-5, 1970. (Source: Page 122 of this UCLA Basketball media guide: )

I couldn't find a box score or news clipping, but if we really did have a lead at halftime, it must have been a hellacious second half.
